Our learning this week:
Students continue to work on their personal goals in their journals. There is a lot of progress happening in student writing and drawing skills. Students are encouraged to work on proper letter formation, sounding out words, capital letters and punctuation. We are starting to work on sentence structure as well. We learned about the letter e and the sounds associated with it. Students also got to know King Eddie, the silent e that goes at the end of a word and makes the vowel say its name. We had a full week of measuring in math. We used scenarios involving zookeepers feeding snakes and figuring out how many people could live on an island while focusing on length and area. We will continue measuring for another week. Zero the Hero also came and visited for our 80th day of school! We couldn't have asked for a better day for a community walk. It was great to look at landmarks and signs in the Hawkwood Community and get in 7,500 steps! We have begun to broaden our view to our Calgary community now and explored some landmarks that we're most familiar with. When studying the community, we can't forget community helpers. Thank you to those families that sent an artifact to share with the class! Next Week: Hat and mitten donations Winter walk and dress up in hats and mitts day on Thursday Community helper presentations all week! Welcome back to school, it's been a great week!
Language Arts - This week we read the book The Word Collector by Peter Reynolds. We will be using this book to anchor our language arts activities over the month. So far, we have done some personal writing responses, searched for words around the room and talked about alliteration (Lisa likes ladybugs!). The work the students are completing will be complied into a book at the end of our study to showcase all of their literacy learning. Math - Our focus over the next few weeks will be measurement. In Grade One, we use non-standard units of measure like blocks, hands, feet, straws, popsicle sticks, marker lids, etc. Students explored materials and participated in measuring a variety of things within the classroom. We also began talking about distance and used our feet to measure distances within the school and outside on the playground too! Social Studies - Community is a big topic! We focused a lot on our home and school communities before the winter break. We've now been examining our larger Hawkwood community under the themes of work, live and play. *Gymnastics has started in gym! We have gym on Days 1,3,5. On these days, students should wear comfortable clothing! Next Week - Our community walk is on Monday. We will be walking to the library and exploring landmarks along the way. - Look out for Scholastic book orders this week! - Please continue home reading. Book exchange occurs on Wednesdays!
