Our Learning:
We continue to work on our Lively Letter program to reinforce letter sounds, which incorporates printing and guided drawing. We read Thunder Boy Jr. by Sherman Alexie to kick off our Social Studies unit My World: Home, School, Community. We enjoyed learning about our names (thank you for sending back the sheets!) and came up with fun nicknames related to our hobbies and favourite things. We looked at different types of houses on the Smartboard and students drew their own. They had a lot of fun when we used Google Maps to find their actual houses! Drawing pictures of their family members was a very engaging task as well. We were focused on counting and subitizing during our math block. I did gymnastics in gym. ~Joshua We did 10 guided drawings about Halloween. ~Maku We are going to library. ~Marshall I put on a ribbon show with my friends in gym. ~Maddison We're doing poems. ~Ali We do poems everyday. ~Dexten We did name art and we painted overtop of it and we used marker to colour it in. ~Armaan For gym I got a bank shot. ~Malcolm I hula hooped in gym. ~Charleigh We tried to make houses the same as our houses. ~Amina We went to gym and there was so much stuff because it was choice day. ~Wyatt I did a headstand in gym. ~Dany This is the last day of our choice day. ~Anna We sketched the jars that the animals were in there. ~Lana Next Week: Please return Home Reading bags on Wednesday for a book exchange. Halloween is on Wednesday! Students are invited to dress up for the day if they want. We will have a costume parade, decorate pumpkins and watch a fun Halloween video! If you wish to send in food, please ensure it is nut-free. :)

Our Learning:
This week we were so fortunate to be able to take two walks over to Hawkwood Community Garden. The first walk provided us the opportunity to use prisms to create rainbows in our Visual Journals. The second walk focused on Autumn observations. We ended off our Patterns and Sorting math unit this week with some hands on learning. We transferred this knowledge onto paper. We'll dive more into numbers next week and revisit patterns and sorting throughout the year. Our science unit on colour allowed us to do a few experiments this week. We learned some new vocabulary - transparent and opaque and tested out our ability to create opaque and transparent leaves. We also soaked some fruit, vegetables and spices in water and predicted what colour the water would turn. Later we used eye droppers to transfer the coloured water and the soaked natural materials onto birch bark. Zero the Hero paid us a visit on Wednesday for our 30th day of school! Students always enjoy their time with Grade 5 Buddies on Fridays. This week we made some spooky and silly skeletons! Ms. Day paid us a visit this week to show us a porcupine quill that her dog unfortunately got stuck in his snout! :( We painted our leaves. ~Joshua We did transparent. ~Dany We ran in gym. ~Marshall We talked about what colours are in fall. ~Lana We got new jobs. ~Ali We did science. We took oil and a pompom and we took our paper that we coloured with crayons. We took the pompom and rubbed it all over to see it on the other side. ~Wyatt We had choice day for gym. ~Malcolm We went on a walk and we traced what we felt in nature. ~Armaan The jars turned to colours. ~Anna We had jars with food inside them and added hot water to make a dye. ~Madison We did a nature walk. ~Mayan We had buddies today. ~Maku We met Anders who is Mrs. Alm's husband. ~Maddie and Hooria We had a nature walk and found rainbows. ~Paisley You gave us these cubes that showed rainbows and we tried to colour and copy it. ~Wyatt They are prisms. ~Marshall Next Week: I hope everyone has been reading their Home Reading book! Please return on Wednesday for an exchange. Library on Thursday. Please return Name Sheets by Tuesday. Students will be sketching their houses this week as we move into our social studies unit My World: Home, School, Community. Our Learning:

We continued our work with Lively Letters this week focusing on k and g. Students loved drawing their baby kangaroos! We continued working with patterns where sound and action patterns were some of the focus. We also talked about the core of the pattern (the part that repeats). Students were paired off with a "popsicle friend" and their task was to copy a pattern created by their friend. We had our second visit from Zero the Hero on our 20th day of school!! Students always look forward to his visits! Stone Soup was a fun focus this week. Thank you for all the vegetables that were sent in to fill our pot...students sure love carrots! The actual soup was made on Thursday and was a hit with some of the students even having seconds. Nothing like warm soup on a cold day! Students did a great job on their Thanksgiving wreaths and on their hand and foot turkeys that they created with their Grade 5 buddies help. Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Long Weekend!
