Our Learning:
This past week we were lucky enough to visit the Hawkwood Community Garden twice. The wonderful weather allowed us to comfortably look for patterns in nature and enjoy spending time outdoors. Back inside the classroom, we are continuing our study of patterns. Students are getting many opportunities to create and describe different types of patterns: AB, ABC, AAB, ABB are some of the repeating patterns we've been exploring. Our study of colour had students discovering primary and secondary colours. They enjoyed mixing primary colours and got a great lesson on paintbrush care and cleaning! :) Students used paint chips to order shades and tints. Later, we used these to create leaves to adorn our beautiful fall trees. During our literacy block in the mornings, students are continuing to work on their stamina while reading independently. They are also getting practice putting letters and words down on paper during journal writing times. Next Week: Stone Soup! Please see note coming home on Monday.

Our Learning: This week, on the 10th day of school, we had a special visit by Zero the Hero! We were treated to a sweet treat while we worked on some number concepts. We sorted all of our loose parts according to colour. We sure had some fun looking through everyone's treasures. Once sorted, students choose items to complete their self-portraits. They look fantastic! We began work with a phonics program called Lively Letters on Monday. Our intensive work with phonics will continue over the next few months. This week we focused on the letters p and b, incorporating some guided drawing and printing practice in our learning. This week we began our colour unit in science. We went on a scavenger hunt outside looking for colours and sorted them by natural and manufactured objects. We talked about primary colours and mixed them to create secondary colours. We also listened to some really fun songs that got us moving to colour! FYI: We’ve been reviewing procedures for fire drills and lock downs this week. We’ll be having our first practice with the whole school before the end of September! Our Learning: This week we focused a lot on our names through songs, rhymes, stories, graphs, numbers and manipulatives. Students also got more familiar with their classmates’ names when they were challenged to write names hidden around the classroom. Ms. Wajda visited our classroom again this week to work on reading stamina. Students independently engaged in their books by reading pictures, reading words or retelling their story. Homework: Remember to return forms and fees as soon as possible! We will be starting our work with “loose parts” on Monday. Thank you to those of you who have already contributed! Wow! Look at some of these amazing art pieces that students collaboratively created with pattern blocks!
Happy First Week of Grade One!

Homework Our class will be collecting “Loose Parts!” Would you help us? When you’re putting out your recycling, cleaning your house or walking in nature, you might find some small items that we could add to our collection. Please help us find things like broken jewelry, string, ribbons, feathers, things from nature, metal pieces, fabric, beads, keys, corks, bottle caps, buttons, etc. and send them to school with your child this week (please ensure that everything you send is clean). Thank you for adding to our collection and helping us engage in open-ended discovery and exploration! |
