Our Learning:
We made stuff for our Father's Day surprises and don't show this to your dad. One of them is a book about your dad. The other one is a plant and it's growing so you have to wait at home. ~Malcolm We made things we had to twist together and decorate them. They were our research animals. We couldn't use glue or tape only wire and yarn. ~Madison Everyone got to make one of their animals out of some things and we to practice using these for the first time. ~Maddison We all got to make our own little addition math books which were all word problems. ~Maku Everyone got to make something like a diorama, poster, puppets and we presented it by switching to other desks to see every presentation. ~Marshall We built those statues. ~Nicolas We're reading a book which is a new book that's called Charlotte's Web. I found out that chapter books are actually pretty cool. ~Hooria We learned about our 5 senses. ~Saavan We made those statues for our animal presentations. The person who came in showed us things you can do with an artist. You have to bend the wires. ~Makayla I did art with my rabbit. ~Harrison Outside in recess I rang the bell. ~Joshua We made those research books and also we were finding our animal. ~Iman We introduced posters, diorama's and puppets to a group of 4. I really liked the diorama's so much they were really cool. ~Amina In math we did a colouring sheet and I got it right. ~Malcolm We watched a video on the SMARTboard about a bunny. ~Anna

Reminders:
All library books were due back today. If you forgot to send it back, please do so on Monday. We are starting final animal projects on Monday! If your child indicated that they would like to make a diorama, please ensure they bring a shoebox or other small box to school on Monday. Those students are: Maddie, Wyatt, Dany, Maku, Nicolas, Dexten, Marshall, Saavan. Please continue to work on addition and subtraction within 18, mental math skills (doubles, near doubles, counting on, counting back, zero's, ten's), home reading, and sight words at home. More exposure really makes a difference! :) We have 2 special events this week! On Tuesday afternoon, Scientists in Schools is coming in to talk to us about our senses. They have some fun activities planned! On Wednesday morning, the Leighton Art Centre will be coming in to help us create some art based on our research animal. Our Learning: Malcolm has a shirt that shows a QR code. The QR code is about a shark eating pizza. ~Malcolm We painted pots. ~Maddie We picked our final art project for our animal research and I picked a poster. ~Madison We did this new thing in math and it's called mad minutes. ~Makayla We opened our journals and we wrote a name for our Hawk mascot. ~Marshall We are trying to figure out if the Hawk is a boy or a girl and we're naming a name. Mr. MacDonald is picking a person for the hawk's name and where it came from. ~Amina Keep practicing adding and subtraction. ~Ali In science, we finished our animal research books. We just watched a bat video for Iman and Prince. ~Malcolm We did some math with QR codes and we tried a new QR code from Malcolm's shirt. ~Joshua Our plant is not surviving because it doesn't have soil. ~Armaan We had a drum. ~Harrison We made pop up pages in our animal research books. ~Saavan We watched a Canada Goose video and the goose got so hurt but it was good that they got there right away. ~Amina Please practice sight words at home! ~Maddie Our Learning:
We made books about our animals and mine was a porcupine. The last page we finished was adaptation and each day we had to do a page. ~Armaan Our animal research books took so much effort, so much colouring and so much detail but I liked it. ~Hooria We did our books and Maku and me did a Bald Eagle. Maku drew a river with trees and that's where that comes from. ~Joshua Mrs. Alm gave math sheets. ~Iman We did animal research but we didn't finish it because on Monday we're going to do a pop-out. Mine was a moose. ~Malcolm When we were with our buddies they showed us was adaptation was and then we wrote it down. Hummingbirds adaptation is they can hum with their wings. ~Maddie When we did animal research we had to do predator, habitat, adaptation, diet. ~Madison We watched a video about animals and there's different kinds of animals. ~Anna And there's also different kinds of animals that you don't know about. ~Charleigh Our Learning:
We did math. ~Iman We did art. ~Charleigh And we made them for the Volunteer Tea. ~Amina The art was a dandelion. ~Maddie We sing in front of our parents at the Volunteer Tea. ~Anna We are going to do some research with our buddies. ~Malcolm In Science, we did some animals and our first animal was a giraffe. ~Malcolm We planted seeds and mine is already growing. ~Makayla All the plants are growing. ~Wyatt There was a guest who did magic. ~Maku When he put our words on a book, it wrote magically. Since this day the seed hasn't been growing yet. ~Hooria We have been planting a lot of different kids of seeds. Kidney bean, apple seed and we're trying to plant a cherry seed and an avocado seed. ~Armaan We planted 3 types of seeds. Corn is growing tall. ~Wyatt We did so much math that we're going to bring math home. We had to figure out with a number line. ~Lana Our seed grew really long. It has a stem and it has some leaves. ~Nicolas We planted an apple seed but it's tiny. ~Tathya We did some research on plants and animals and then we wrote and drew about it. ~Marshall Next Week: - No school on Monday - We didn't get to our word family challenge on Thursday so we'll have it next week instead. - We will begin animal research! - Volunteer Tea on Friday from 10:00 - 11:00 - In math we will continue adding and subtracting within 20, mental math skills (doubles, near doubles such as 5+6, fact families such as 6+2=8 so 8-2=6, recalling basic facts quickly), and word problems. - Please remember to continue practicing sight words and reading fluency by rereading home reading books many times to add speed and expression! Our Learning:
In math we did number lines. ~Hooria This morning we went to an assembly and there were three winners and I was one of them. ~Maddie We started a new unit about plants and it's really fun. I like plants because they give you oxygen. Trees give you oxygen. ~Makayla We made Mother's Day pictures and we made Mother's Day books. ~Charleigh We did buddies and we went to the library and we did math in it. ~Tathya We planted a plant and it's been 8 days. ~Lana We made those pictures. ~Iman We had a walk with Miss Julie and she showed us how much plants and animals are in the garden. ~Malcolm On the community walk we went into this forest and explored and found lots of cool things like branches and catkins. We learned about a lot of things. ~Madison My buddy won the Go Pro. ~Dexten We've been working so hard on our oral stories that we made pictures on the wall of our oral story character. There's little stories on the wall that tell in the beginning, middle, end. ~Armaan On our community walk we learned that pine cones have seeds in them which are really small and you don't see. ~Amina We have a new person in our school and it's a hawk and he loves dancing. ~Ali Our Learning:
We made our own stories. ~Dexten We told our stories to Ms. Bakker/Li's class. ~Dany We did some math. ~Iman We did math when we have to write a challenge and the time we did it. ~Lana In Science we planted 2 seeds and they're going to grow really fast. Right now there is a lot of water in one of the seeds. ~Maddie I read about the turtle. ~Harrison In math, we learned about doubles like 2+2, 4+4, 8+8 and some people know them very well but some people need more practice. ~Malcolm Mrs. Alm gave us seedlings to grow in our garden. ~Marshall We're doing a new unit and it's about plants and living things. ~Amina We talked about what flowers need. ~Saavan We put the desks like a horseshoe table because we can show people our stories. ~Anna In math, we did word problems. ~Ali In math we learned about doubles +1. A lot of people need practice with doubles +1. ~Malcolm In Science, we drew a picture of a flower and I think it's Mrs. Alm's favourite kind of flower. ~Maddie Next Week: *We will continue learning strategies to help us with addition and subtraction. Please help your child practice doubles if he/she doesn't know them yet. This knowledge will help them so much with mental math. If I know that 6+6=12 then I know that 6+7=13 because IT'S JUST ONE MORE! :) *We'll get back to work families this week. Watch for the brainstorming sheet to be sent home on Monday. Please return completed sheets on Friday. Have your child read the words all week to practice fluency. *Thank you to those families who are reading home reading books with their children at home. Exchange is every Wednesday. Re-reading promotes fluency! *We missed our community walk last week but we'll definitely be out visiting Hawkwood Community Garden and ravine on Thursday. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather on Thursday and everyday! *Book orders are due on Tuesday. *Music Monday is on Monday! *Hawkwood Family Math Night is on Thursday evening from 6:30 - 8:00. We hope to see you there! Tomorrow:
Class pictures...bring your smile! :) Hats On For Mental Health - Students can bring a hat to wear all day! Our Learning:
We did our stories of our characters. How they got their things that they were missing. ~Malcolm We're drawing our animal that has something missing. ~Iman That's why I made the turtle. ~Harrison We made Ipods and it was about our doubles song. It's made out of paper and it's pretend. When we press play it's actually on the SMARTboard. ~Armaan We are learning about doubles. ~Saavan Like 2+2, 4+4, 5+5. ~Ali We did oral stories about our animals that we like. ~Lana We're learning about things that live and non-live. ~Maddie We're saving plastic stuff and styrofoam stuff so we can save the earth for Earth Day and everyday! ~Wyatt We walked outside and put our artifacts back into Mother Earth. We can't just keep it or it will just have to throw it away. ~Armaan When we threw them away there was only one that was alive and it was a spider. We made pictures for Earth Day when we came back to school. ~Maddie The spider was staying inside there for along time. He was super sad. When we went out we got a little bit of time to go onto the playground. ~Malcolm The spider's name was Olaf. ~Madison Coming Up: - Students will continue to work on their very own oral story next week. - We will continue to work on math strategies for addition and subtraction up to 20. The strategies we have already explored are: drawing pictures, using manipulatives, using 10-frames, doubles. Students were very excited to create their own Ipods that hold their doubles flashcards. Please practice these at home! - Movie Night is next Thursday, May 2 at 6:30pm. * Please remind your child that our Flex Entry time in the morning is meant for students who need some extra time or some calming time before school begins. Our Learning: We shared about our artifacts to our table group. We told about how old they were and where we got them and we all listened. Then we drew them. ~Maddie Everyone brought an artifact from home that represents their family. ~Marshall We're retelling a story about Country Mouse and Town Mouse. ~Ali We made Town Mouse and Country Mouse puppets. ~Charleigh We got to colour the Town Mouse and Country Mouse puppets and we're going retell the story with our buddies. ~Armaan We made puppets so we could retell the story because it's an important job to retell stories in Grade One. ~Malcolm I write about the Nutcracker. ~Harrison We can't bring any wrappers to school because we're helping the environment so we have to bring containers to put our food in. ~Amina Only you can bring containers. ~Iman Our classroom was the cleanest classroom in the school so we got the GOLDEN GARBAGE CAN!! ~Dexten Today is our last day with the Golden Garbage Can. We only get it for a week. There is one for Division 1 and one for Division 2. ~Wyatt We did subtraction. ~Prince We can draw our artifacts. ~Anna We did subtraction and addition and we used a pizza and a hot chocolate cup. When we were done math we got to colour the hot chocolate and the pizza. ~Armaan We used manipulatives to make subtraction and addition from hot chocolate and a pizza. ~Malcolm We walked around the room and we were finding some math questions on addition and subtraction. ~Lana Next Week: - Mrs. Alm will be away next week from Monday - Thursday. - Ms. Allegro's last day with us will be on Thursday. - There isn't any school on Friday, April 19 and Monday, April 22. Back to school on Tuesday, April 23. - There won't be any word family homework next week. - Thank you for sending artifacts or pictures of your artifacts!
