Thank you to everyone who is helping our school move into Litterless Lunches! Students are very proud of reducing the amount of litter they are leaving at school. :)
The Grade One field trip to the Calgary Tower this week gave students a first-hand look at our downtown urban community from different perspectives. They took part in a high elevation scavenger hunt that allowed them to see many of our city’s landmarks and learn about their importance. Students were also able to learn many facts about how the tower was constructed. A trip to the Calgary Tower wouldn’t be complete without attempting to step on the glass floor viewing deck. Students may have been a bit apprehensive at first but by the end of our visit they were completely comfortable walking, jumping and even laying down on the glass! As one student pointed out, “I was so comfortable I could have slept there!” Our Learning: We did assembly. ~Nicolas We started Litterless Lunches. ~Saavan We saw Elder Shirley. ~Dany We had music and played a game with Grade 3's. ~Tathya We went on the Calgary Tower field trip to go on the glass floor. ~Malcolm We went to the Calgary Tower and learned that it is the 6th tallest. She let us touch some of the things that we brought. She gave us seeds to put on Mother Earth. ~Wyatt We got new math centres. Mrs. Alm brought shells from the beach. ~Armaan We're starting golden garbage cans for Litterless lunch. ~Nicolas We made our own version of 10 for Dinner by Jo Ellen Bogart because we did it for math. ~Malcolm On Thursday we introduced our new math centres. ~Makayla Next Week: - Litterless Lunches continue! - Word family homework going home on Monday - Home reading exchange on Wednesday - Addition and subtraction strategies - Return family questionnaire on Wednesday and please send an artifact too if you're able. Word families are very important! Instead of sounding out every letter in a word, students learn to read familiar patterns of letters quickly and fluently. Thank you to families who are working with these word families with their child throughout the week. Please keep your sheets at home for the entire week in order to review these word family patterns all week. Sight words are very important in Grade One! Last November, I sent home sight word lists with each student. These lists were highlighted with the words that students knew. I encouraged families to practice non-highlighted words with their child at home. I have resent the lists this week, however these sheets are not highlighted. Please work on these words with your child. Discover which words they still don't know. We do a lot of work with sight words at school but supplementing at home is very beneficial. Sight words comprise most of the words that students will see in beginning reading level books so learning them is vital in Grade One. We have been working on 2D and 3D shapes. Students should be able to name the shapes, identify their attributes (characteristics), be able to sort them and identify the shapes in their environment. We have introduced new math tools called cuisenaire rods. These give students a chance to develop their spatial awareness and the part-whole relationship which is a necessary step in beginning addition and subtraction. We have begun our building unit in science. Students are working in groups to complete specific building challenges. They are exploring materials, discovering how to use them in their projects and realizing what makes a good material for a particular project. Through these challenges, students are strengthening their skills involved in being a great team member. Pink Shirt Day allowed us to deepen our understanding of empathy. We read We're All Wonders by R.J. Palacio and created an art piece based on the main character. Students used their own ideas of kindness to add to their work. Next Week On Friday, students will get a chance to share their sight word learning. Please keep sight word lists at home as a reference for you and please continue working on reading these words. Learning to read these words will very much help your child in their reading journey! Thank you for your on-going support! New word family lists will be handed out on Monday. Send these back on Friday. Continue reading and spelling these words all week for extra practice. Please continue to read home reading books at home. Rereading promotes fluency. Thank you to those families who are reading with their child at home and regularly returning their books on Wednesday for an exchange. If you have lost the book, please let me know. Wednesdays are home reading exchange days. *Sorry for the lack of pictures this week. They all deleted while I was trying to attach them! :( This Week: We celebrated our 100th day of school this week! Students had lots of fun while engaged in many hands-on math tasks. We reinforced the idea of counting by 1's and 10's to 100, recognizing numbers to 100, 2D shapes and more! Thank you for helping your child select a character and sharing it this week! The characters will stay at school for the next month as students engage in building tasks related to their character. The idea of empathy will play a large part in this project as they attempt to put themselves in their characters shoes and design building projects keeping their characters at the forefront of their minds. Speaking of building, thanks for all of the supplies that you have donated to our classroom! We sorted all our materials this week and students are very excited to begin using them next week! We are continuing our work with word families. Two word families are introduced at the beginning of the week and students explore those word families all week. On Fridays, they write a "test" to see how much they've learned. Thank you for helping your child explore these word families at home and returning the sheets by Friday. Please continue reading with your child at home and sending home reading books on Wednesdays to be exchanged. Reading with your child is one of the most important things you can do at home!
