Dear Parents,
PINK SHIRT DAY was so much fun! Thanks for participating and supporting students STANDING UP - SPEAKING OUT- AND SUPPORTING -eachother in their commitment to not tolerate bullying. FYI -Last call to bring in your small action figure (i.e. lego guy) for our Building Things project. -We need volunteer help! We are creating a base for a building things unit out of cardboard squares. The dimensions are approx: Length: 44cm sq x Width 41cm sq. Upcoming Dates: Compassionate February Thursday February 28 - Movie Night (6:00 PM) - Movie TBD Friday March 1- NO School PD day Our Learning: This morning we worked on our Literacy Centers. We then learned about how colors can represent emotions, or virtues. Pink often represents love and kindness; red often represents courage and bravery, etc. We then designed and planned Friendship Bracelets, including the beads we thought were very important in friendship. After that, we got to select our own beads and put together our own bracelets. Pink Shirt Day assembly was awesome- we learned how it started and saw a skit about bullying and how to stand up against bullies. Mr. MacDonald read Enemy Pie, and the Grade 4s showed up their Friendship Tree. We watched "Unsung Hero" to see how kindness, empathy, and courage are so important to making our world a better place. In the afternoon we worked with the Math Coach Stacy Wu, and flexed our math muscles. Using cuisenaire rods to develop our spatial reasoning, part-part- whole understanding as well as enhancing our math vocabulary and problem solving. At the end of the day we had music. Lastly we got our sight word assessments. We are taking these home to practice. Please practice the highlighted words daily for a minimum of 5 minutes each day. Our hopes are to know ALL of our sight words from both of these lists in the next few weeks. Circle or check the words your child has mastered. You do not need to send these back, a new one will be done in a few weeks. Students will be given several tests over the next few weeks to see how they are progressing. Litterless Lunch: Our class is going to practice trying to bring a litter less lunch (or close to!) from now on. Students will be bringing home garbage and containers in their lunch kit. The purpose? 1. Parents will know exactly how much food is eaten (most kids are great at this!), 2. it is environmentally friendly and reduces waste, 3. it supports and encourages healthy food choices, and highlights food awareness. 4. Our school, unfortunately does not have a compost program - yet. 5. This will directly connect to our science, social studies, math and health curriculum, bringing awareness to students about what is natural (i.e.. apple) , man made (i.e. plastic); awareness about healthy eating and food choices, awareness about our personal environmental footprint on the earth. We will also be doing some graphing and math around this new initiative. Thank you for your support! What's Up in Grade One? Biscotti Kid: Gabriella for COURAGE! For Homework: -at, and -ed word families due Monday! Dear Parents,
We didn't write in our agenda today. A reminder to please return Home Reading daily. Thanks! Upcoming Dates: Compassionate February February 25 - Fun Lunch - Subway February 27 - Pink Shirt Day February 28 - Movie Night (6:00 PM) - Movie TBD Our Learning: Students shared many of the -it and -in words they have come up with. We got to practice the new words from this week in many centers today. Two new centers have been added: "Word Builder" and "Tumbling Tower" to practice our word families. In math we explored Cuisenaire Rods, ordering them from shortest to tallest, smallest to largest. We then traced the rods and colored them. This will help us to develop a visual referent for future skills with mental math, comparing, ordering, etc. In Science we slowed down and listened to Nature Sounds as we took time to chill out & to 'notice' our environment using our senses. We then began talking about materials found in nature, and compared it to man-made materials. We ventured outdoors with Mrs. Patterson's class to explore naturally occurring patterns, materials, and shapes. In health we discussed how to work together as a community, be fair, and take turns. When we race to always be first, or make unsafe choices- it makes other people feel uncomfortable. We shared personal strategies to help us focus, be fair, and make good choices. At the end of the day we had fun in music! What's Up in Grade One? Biscotti Kid: Charlotte for Compassion! Words this week: -in, -it words Science: Building Things; Destination Imagination Challenge Literacy: Compassion, poetry, oral storytelling Math: 2D/3D shapes, cuisenaire rods as a visual referent. Mr. Janzic is collecting 4L milk jugs (preferable from Costco or Beatrice) that are super sturdy and strong to use for the curling unit. Please bring some in by Friday if you have any! Upcoming Dates: Compassionate February February 25 - Fun Lunch - Subway February 27 - Pink Shirt Day February 28 - Movie Night (6:00 PM) - Movie TBD Our Learning: We finished up many of our Hundredth Day activities, watched a video called "Unsung Hero" on compassion https://youtu.be/uaWA2GbcnJU. (warning: you will cry, it's actually an insurance commercial). Charlotte shared her items for Biscotti kid & we did a bit of writing about a time we showed compassion. Gabriella said its when "you do nice things for animals and people." Kolby added, "compassion is when you help people." and Sydney summed it up with "compassion makes the world a better place." Compassion is a feeling, an emotion - and is followed up by an action, simply because you know it's the right thing to do. Compassion spreads happiness- to the person who shows it as well as the person who receives it. What's Up in Grade One? Biscotti Kid: Charlotte for Compassion!
