Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here is a little update from Grade 1 this week. Ms. Heagy will be back next week. Week at a Glance: In Science, we invented our own fall colours by mixing primary colours, and black and white. Students named their own colours as part of their fall art projects. Some examples of the colour names we created include meatball brown, orange blossom purple crusher, and garbage grey. We also looked at transparency and how light can move or not move through different objects. In an experiment, we made paper turn translucent with the use of oil. We also discovered what textures are the best to paint on in another experiment. This week we focused on the lively letters of th, qu, m, n, and u. After reading Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s This Plus That: Life’s Little Equations. Students created their own “this plus that” statement in their journals. In mathematics, students worked on creating patterns in various ways, identifying the core of a pattern and extending a pattern through various work and math centres. In Health, we continued to work on mindfulness by discussing and exploring different ways that help us be calm. Ask Me About: Here are some questions you can discuss with your child about the what happened at school this week.
Upcoming Events and Reminders:
Sincerely, Emily Reinbolt Dear Parents/Guardians, Here is a little update from Grade 1 this week. Week at a Glance: In Science we have been exploring different aspects of colour. Students inquired into what happens when they mix a primary colour with white or when they mix a primary colour with black. We discovered different tones, shades and tints which allowed us to create a “sky colour” picture. In mathematics, we focused on Zero the Hero and what happens when we make 10. Students demonstrated different ways to represent the number ten, through manipulatives, fingers, words, tally marks, etc. In Literacy, we continued with our Lively Letters of f, k, o, c, and g. Students wrote a journal entry about what they were thankful for. We began to explore mindfulness by practicing colouring mandalas to calming music. Next week we will further extend our exploration of colour in Science. In Math, we will look at patterns through a series of centres and activities. In Literacy, we will continue with our Lively Letters. Ask Me About: Here are some questions you can discuss with your child about the what happened at school this week.
