Using all of our learning about community features, we began a journey into exploring properties and the purpose of different building structures.
This Design task began with exploring properties of different materials and adhesives in collaborative teams using Destination Imagination challenges. "base" "stability" "strength" became a part of our new vocab. We applied our learning from math about non-standard measurement (i.e. using paperclips, our hands) compared to standard measurement (i.e. a ruler). We explored properties of 2D and 3D shapes, strengthened our spatial skills using cuisenaire rods and puzzles, and then constructed our own Whoville communities to fit our characters we brought in. We created our own books about the Design Task with planning, creating diagrams with labels, and then writing about our structures. We then had the chance to write about our characters and how they used the model structures in our community. To help us become self directed learners we discussed the criteria for each task, and then reflected on each task using a self assessment. Soon we will begin to create class generated rubrics for criteria, set personal goals and begin using different kinds of self assessments. Most of all - we had FUN being creative by INDEPENDENTLY designing our very own community. A few tasks were teacher directed- our creation of the boat, and how to design our own roads and lake. Of course, Ms. Heagy was in charge of the glue gun, but students decided where they wanted their 'details' such as rocks, pine cone trees, and sand. March 21/22 I look forward to seeing you at student led conferences! I hope everyone enjoys their break. School resumes on April 1st (no joke) and remember to have your field trip forms in for our trip to the Calgary Tower on April 2nd. Looks like we had a special visitor today - a little green guy that loves to make messes and play tricks. Ms. Heagy shared a story about how in Ireland her and Joshua learned about the legends of Leprechauns, and found some cool artifacts. But since then, a Leprechaun has been playing silly tricks on her! Thankfully Grade One's decided they could design a Leprechaun trap and try to catch him. She has asked that one of their wishes could be used to ask the Leprechaun to stop making messes and playing tricks! Good Luck!
